The German Reformed church was started in the German states during the
1530's and 1540's by Ulrich Zwingli and John Calvin. This religion
was brought to the new world by immigrants. The first organized
German Reformed Chruch congregation in America was established in
Pennsylvania in 1725. In 1867, they dropped the word German from
their name and became the Reformed Church. In 1934, the Reformed
church merged with the Evangelical church (also a German denomination)
and they formed the Evangelical and Reformed Church. In 1957, the
Evangelical and Refomed Church merged with the Congregational
Christian Church and formed the United Church of Christ (not to be
confused with the Church of Christ).
