Hello Debra,

I agree with Frans that it may be likely that Harmsen is of Dutch origin as
son of Harm, this given name was/is used mostly in the Northeastern
provinces of the Netherlands (Groningen, Drenthe, Friesland, Overijssel). In
Germany it would more likely be Hermsen as son of Herm or Herman.

There are books available with the names of immigrants from German and The
Netherlands to the USA (Germans to America). As far as I know many libraries
in the States have these books.

But before that you have to find out more about John Howard and especially
the town he was born. It is likely that this information can be find on his
death certificate or his marriage certificate. This can be found in the town
archives.
