Subject: Given name JOBST

I am seeing a number of 18th-19th century males in the Osnabrueck area with
this first name. Does this name appear as a given name in other parts of
Germany, or is it limited to northern Germany? Is there any equivalent for it
in other languages, including English? Are there other forms of this name (is
it a nickname)?
Just curious as to where this comes from. Any input welcome. Thanks.
