If you are new to genealogy you must visit:
http://www.genealogy.net/gene/genealogy.html be sure to read, 'Getting
Started', 'General Help' and 'FAQ' these will give you a good basis for
researching German ancestors. If you spend some time learning the basics you
will find that it will be worth while in doing productive research.
You will not be able to do all your research at your computer though it can
be a good help. Go to an
LDS Family History Center, they are unquestionably the best source of good
information available. Learn to use the Family History Library Catalog, it
is available on line at:
http://www.familysearch.com/eng/Library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.asp
Click on 'Place Search' and type in the name of the town - Emmerich. You
will find there is more than one so you will have to either figure out which
was the correct one or failing in that to read both records.
Church records are really great if your family stayed there for any length
of time you can put together several generations.
BTW at that time you will find that the majority of German men were named
"Jan, Johann or Johannes".
Good luck,
Celia
