Although many (most?) Germans speak English and are happy to do so,
they seem to appreciate it if you at least make the attempt to speak
German. In 2 weeks of "Guten Tag, sprechen sie English bitte?" I only
met 5 or 6 people who didn't immediately smile and switch to English.
And only 2 people who were having a bad day and didn't smile when they
switched to English.

Phrase books are readily available and struggling through a broken
Englsih-German dialog can be fun too.
