It works well if you are not dealing with a common name. Although I would
say that writing works better than calling. If you write, it gives the
people you contact time to think before responding to you. Include all of
your contact information (telephone and e-mail).
My family/ancestors from Pomerania were dispersed all over Germany due to
the events of WWII. When I got into genealogy, I decided to write all
people with the name that I am researching listed in the German online
telephone directory. Most answered me by letter, one phoned me here in the
United States, and some did not respond at all. I have to admit I felt a
little foolish at the time I wrote those letters, but it turned out to be
one of the best things I ever did. I found a large part of my family and
have over the years met many of them in person. Some put me in touch with
other family members doing genealogy and I was able to get a wealth of
information about ancestors, including my grandmother. Even her maiden name
was unknown to me.

Thanks to the internet....this would not have been possible without it. I
urge you to try it. You have nothing to lose.
