The Batch numbers available for Germany are listed alphabetically by townand by
Postleitzahl (ZIP) at this website:
http://igi.wahler.org/index.php?seite=main
Click the language you want to work in at the top of the first screen.
To find a Batch number yourself, do this:
Choose some surname (not necessarily the name you are particularly interested
in) that you know occurs in the area that you are interested in. Enter this name
in an IGI search for "Germany". From the list of results, choose one for the
town in question, double-click on it. At the bottom of the screen that opens
you'll see the Batch Number (M or C, followed by 6 digits). Return to IGI search
and insert this number (including the initial letter, no spaces) in the Batch
number field. Insert the name you are looking for in Surname, and enter Germany
in Region. Click on Search.
This method works best if the name that you originally use to find the Batch
number is one that occurs frequently in your area but is relatively rare in the
rest of Germany. If you use Schmidt or Mayer, you'll get far too many results to
work with.
Note also, that not all localities in Germany have Batch Numbers.
Hope this helps.
George
