SEMINAR:SANTA ROSA, SONOMA COUNTY, CALIF.

Our speaker, Helen F. M. Leary, CG, CGL, FASG, FNGS will present an
all-day seminar on "Clutching at Straws and Other Last-Ditch Efforts" at
the Luther Burbank Center for the Arts in Santa Rosa on March 24, 2001.
This seminar will be the ninth annual all-day seminar sponsored by the
Sonoma County Genealogical Society, and the fourth to be held at the
Burbank Center for the Arts, which is located just off Highway 101 at the
River Road/Mark West exit north of Santa Rosa.
Topics, in order of presentation, will be:
Is This the Same Man, or a Different One
With the Same Name?
From Present Residence to Former Address: How to
Backtrack An Ancestor Who Has Moved.
Time Lines and Real Lives: How to Use Ancestors'
Life Patterns to Find Their Parents.
The Last Gasp: Weighing the Evidence.
Mrs. Leary will also give a brief presentation concerning the services
offered by and qualifications for certification by Board for Certification
of Genealogists.
Returning vendors this year include Genealogical Resources with a
multitude of books and CDs, The Skeleton Closet who provides forms and
research tools; and a few new surprises! In addition, the society's special
interest groups are encouraged to set up a table also.
A new feature this year, in response to requests, will be a bulletin board
on which persons can post a 3" x 5" card with information about their
surnames of interest.
Mrs. Leary has been active in the field of genealogy for more than
twenty-five years and a professional genealogist since 1978. She is a
Certified Genealogist, Certified Genealogical Lecturer, Fellow of the
American society of Genealogists, and a Fellow of the National Genealogical
Society and received its Award of Merit in 1987. She is past-president of
the Board for Certification of Genealogists and has held numerous other
elective offices in the field: trustee of the Association for Professional
Genealogists, delegate to the Federation of Genealogical Societies, and
president of the North Carolina Genealogical Society (and was recipient of
its Award for Exceptional Service in 1987 and again in 1996). As a member
of the adjunct faculty of the Samford University Institute of Genealogy and
Historical Research, she lectures on advanced methodology and is Course
Coordinator for Level 5_A: Genealogy as a Profession and Level 5-B:
Genealogical Writing. Mrs. Leary is a founding member of the Genealogical
Speakers' Guild and served as the first editor of its newsletter, The
co-editor of and contributing author of North Carolina Research: Genealogy
and Local History and revision editor for the second edition, she has also
contributed articles to genealogical and historical periodicals, including
the National Genealogical Society Quarterly, The American Genealogist, The
Genealogical Journal, The North Carolina Genealogical Society Journal, and
The Tarheel Junior Historian.

Sonoma County Genealogical Society, $18 for non-members. Admission at the
