OXFORDSHIRE FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY
OPEN DAY 2001
This Society's 2001 Open Day will take place on Saturday 6 October 2001,
commencing at 10.00am and finishing at 4.00pm. This year's Open Day will be
at :-
Didcot Civic Hall
Britwell Road
Didcot
Oxon
OX11 7JN
This year marks the society's twenty-fifth year of existence, and to
celebrate this, we will have a special guest at the Open Day. Simon Fowler
will be attending to perform a brief ceremony, as well as to give two
lectures :-
1. lions led by donkeys : a simple introduction to Army, Navy and Air Force
records of the First World War, and
2. brewers, brewsters and barmaids : tracing ancestors who ran pubs and
worked in pubs.
Simon has previously worked for both the Public Record Office and Society of
Genealogists, and is the current editor of Family History Monthly magazine.
In between these two lectures, there will be a demonstration and workshop on
the scanning of old photographs. This will be led by Kevin Tomes, a director
of the well-known local printing firm Parchment (Oxford) Ltd. Kevin's
professional expertise is sure to make this a session not to be missed.
The Open Day will feature the usual assortment of visiting societies,
dealers in second hand books and postcards, sales of microfiche readers and
the like. Our own Society's library and search services will be available
for consultation, whilst we will also be manning a beginners' helpdesk.
Additionally, there will be computing demonstrations, which will give advice
on such things as which genealogical software package to choose, and the use
of the internet in family history.
It is not yet known which Societies will visit us, but last year two dozen
Societies from as far afield as Manchester and Dorset were in attendance. It
is hoped that the Oxfordshire Health Archives, Centre for Oxfordshire
Studies and Oxfordshire Record Office will again be with us.
Admission to the Open Day is free, whilst light refreshment will be on sale
at reasonable prices. The venue is situated within walking distance of
Didcot Parkway railway station, which is on the main London Paddington to
Bristol line. It is also served by frequent bus services from Reading and
Oxford. Those travelling by car will find Didcot close the main A34. There
is adequate free car parking on site.
