CEMETERY INSCRIPTIONS OF THE TOWN OF BARNSTABLE MASSACHUSETTS AND ITS
VILLAGES 1600-1900

This Cape Cod community is one of the earliest settlements in America,
shortly after the Plymouth Plantation of 1620. These Puritans slowly
moved out along the shores of Cape Cod (Eastham, Barnstable, etc.). This
study will only cover cemetery project for the town of Barnstable and
its villages of Barnstable, West Barnstable, Cotuit, Martsons Mills,
Centerville, Hyannis, Hyannisport, Cummaquid and Osterville.

After two years of hard work transcribing and collecting cemetery
records, we discovered that many early settlers came to Barnstable from
the Plymouth Colony era. After realizing many dates of 1600-1700’s, and
discovering that early fires destroyed many town records, I knew how
important this project was. Modern-day vandalism and erosion also made
it a priority.

Besides gathering information off gravestones from each cemetery in
every Barnstable village, burial records were extracted from the Sturgis
Library in Barnstable, and the office of the cemeteries manager in Cotuit.
