Subject: FUGARD/FEUGARDE
Date: Tue, 26 Jun 2001 21:42:41 -0400 (EDT)
My grandfather, William John Fugard was born in Bessbrook, County
Armagh, Ireland in 1870. Upon coming to the US in 1890, he changed the
family name to Feugarde.
My mother told me that the name means fire guard in French, and that he
was descended from French Huguenots. She also stated that her father
spoke French.
A researcher gave me a fee-based URL which showed both FUGARD and
FEUGARD(no E) in France from the 1500's to the early 1800's. However, I
could not read the French. Any suggestions to locate this surname
without knowing the district they were from will be most appreciated. I
have located Fugards in Ireland, Canada, the U.S., and South
Africa(Athol Fugard, the playwright). However, I do not know French
research or the French language. Sorry. Louise in Dayton, Ohio USA
