Subject: LeBlanc became Lieblang
Date: Sat, 6 May 1995 04:19:41 GMT
My ancestors included Lieblangs who emigrated into the Banat region of
Austria-Hungary, now part of Vojvodina, Yugoslavia in 1772. They
reportedly came from the Charleville/St.Hubert/St. Barbe area northeast
of Metz, Lorraine.
Family tradition holds that Lieblangs spoke French and that the name was
originally LeBlanc. Parish registers show a Mathias LeBlanc in the Banat
before and after 1800. The registers also spell the name Lieblang, along
with many other phonetic variations of the two names (LeBlanc and Lieblang).
The change to Lieblang is understandable, as the laanguage of their
village in Banat was German.
I would appreciate any information concerning these ancestors. I have no
knowledge of their Lorraine past (yet), and am doubtful that there's any
connection to the LeBlanc's who settled New France.
Thank you in advance for any and all help,
Michael Stamm
