GARIEPY, ca 1800-1840, Quebec
My cousin and I are trying to link our first USA Gariepy ancestor
back to the progenitor of the Gariepy clan in North America.
According to Tanguay, this was Francois Gariepy, born 1630 to
Jean Gariepy and Jeanne Aragon, of Montfort, Gascogne. Francois
married Jean Odin (b. 1643, Paris) in 1657 in Montreal. By 1794,
Tanguay reports that there were more than 260 descendants of
Francois.
My g-g-grandfather, Edouard Gariepy (Joseph Edouard)(age 31-2)
appeared in Schuyler Falls, Clinton county, (extreme
northeastern) N.Y. as the only Gariepy in the 1850 census. There
were none in 1840. He was listed with his wife, Marceline
Recollet (22) (Vachereau dit Recollet / Recoline??) , and four
children. The parents and two older children are listed as having
been born in Canada. It is clear from the stated ages and other
information that the two oldest children, Clemence(12) and Louis
(Peter Louis)(11), were from a previous marriage. Best guess
would place Louis birth date at 1839-41. According to Louis'
death records, his mother's name was Marie PREVOST. Louis is my
g-grandfather. From then to now, most is known about this line.
Here is the problem. We have no clues as to the area in Quebec
that Edouard came from, hence are unable to find any record of
the birth of Edouard, his parents names, his first marriage to
Marie Prevost (or anyone), or the births of Louis or Clemence in
the 1839-41 period. Edouard was probably born around 1818-19,
probably married before 1839-40, and emigrated around 1846-7.
Since he probably walked to NY from his former home, the area
south of Montreal is most likely.
None of Tanguay's Gariepys had the given name Edouard. Just on a
hunch, is there a town (or parish) named St. Edouard in this
area?
Can anyone offer help or suggestions to close the one or two
generation gap to Tanguay's data?
