While researching my illegitimate ancestor Pierre-Charles Cousin dit Boucher
the word "annobli" came up in an interesting way. Under a law introduced by
King Louis XIV for residents of Canada (New France) of base birth who had
become seigneurs, and whose descendants had inherited the title of seigneur
in direct line for 100 years, the latest seigneur was then entitled to apply
for a certificate of nobility. This took place in 1810 for the husband of
our biological ancestress, Madeleine Gonthier. Jean-Francois Tremblay, the
third seigneur of Les Eboulements in direct line, then changed his name to
the "noble" form of "DuTremblay", the name his branch is known by today in
Canada.
