Hello to all,

This is a REQOUEST FOR DISCUSSION on the proposed new newsgroup
soc.genealogy.huguenots.

If you are interested please have a look at the newsgroup
>soc.genealogy.computing<. Here is a posted Request for discussion on the
topic >>RFD: Proposal new newgroup soc.genealogy.huguenots<<. Please let
me
know your opinion.

But what are the Huguenots about? The 16th century saw the rise of the
Reformation. Jean Cauvin, born 1509 in Noyon/France, became a leading
figure
of the Reformation. He had to flee from his country because of his belief
and
settled in Basle and Geneva / Swizzerland. From the Swiss ground, he had
an
decisive impact on the spreading of the Reformation in France. The
followers
were called Huguenots after the French wording for the Swiss denomination
'Eidgenossen'. In 1559, the French Reformed Church was founded and soon
afterwards, the so-called Huguenot Wars took place from 1562 to 1598.
During
these civil wars, thousands of Huguenots lost their lives, and finally
they
had to leave the country. First, they fled to Swizzerland, and then the
stream of refugees flew to the Netherlands, Scotland, Ireland, South and
North America, Guyana, South Africa and Dutch-India. Refugees also fled to
Norway, Denmark and Sweden, Russia and even Constantinople / Turkey.

In Germany 44,000 Huguenots settled down in those states and
principalities
who backed the reformation. In 1890, descendants of the Huguenots in
Germany
founded the German Huguenot Society in Friedrichsdorf/Taunus. It gives
advice
to all aspects of genealogical research and studies, sells and lends books
and writings, has built up the German Huguenot Centre in Bad Karlshafen
(museum, genealogical office and bookstall).

Being a member of the Society, I would like to find out whether there is a
need for a Huguenot newsgroup, where Huguenot issues can be discussed and
information exchanged. Replies are requested to Ingolf Becker, e-mail:
BeckerIngo @ aol.com.

Greetings

Ingolf Becker
