Your modifier "long ago" appears to be in the wrong place. The term
is still used *today* to refer to French protestants (notice, *not*
merely refugees) long ago.

I think you mean that you are collecting "etymologies" not "definitions"
since there is little dispute as to what Huguenots were, and indeed,
there really isn't any disagreement on the etymology, either:
"Huguenot" comes from a modification of the German "Eidgenossen",
meaning "confederate". Anything else is a folk etymology having no
bearing on the true origin of the term.
