Gay is a fairly common name in the Southern part of France. In the langue'd'oc
it means happy or merry, same as Gai in French. In the old days Gai was often
spelled Gay, so I think it would be a common name throughout all part of
France and in Southern Belgium, where I also run acorss it in the parish
records.
