Is anyone researching FIGUEROA from Cartagena, circa 1790? I have traced my
husband's line back to a Jose M. Figueroa and wife, M. Concepcion Torres.
They were not born in Jamaica, but had a son (Jose Angel) there in 1819.
Jose Senior also had 2 more children with a free black.

When Jose Angel was married in 1844, his parents were noted on the marriage
entry as being "of Cartagena, Colombia". As he does not appear to have any
siblings, perhaps his parents went back to Colombia or to another country.
Checked out Jose Figueroa, Governor of Mexico, but while the timing was
right, he died in 1835.....so not the same man.

I could not find any more siblings, which I would consider unusual for two
good spanish catholics, nor could I find a death date for either of them.
But bear in mind that this would be in the catholic records which were not
allowed to be filmed by the Mormons, so hopefully some more information is
there. A cousin went through as many as he could, but could not find any
more information.

The present priest has decided to allow one of the Jamaican researchers
access to these records and we are all anxiously waiting for the
information. So far she has only done the marriage index and Jose's two
marriages are there.

But just thought I would ask on this list if anyone else is researching
Figueroas. I know it is a common name in spanish countries......up here in
Canada, it is most uncommon. As in Jamaica......only one Figueroa family
descending from Jose M. Figueroa, but back in 1523 or so, the Abbot who was
appointed to Jamaica from the Dominican was Don Luis de Figueroa. He was
appointed, but became ill and didn't go to Jamaica from what I understand.

Sorry to go on so long, but thought the long shot was worth a try.
