Have you checked him out in the census yet? My Great Grandpa was a CHIARA but
he is listed as CHIARO in papers in the US. These papers are during the time
he would not have known hardly any english. He had a son that was 10 in 1910
and the census says that he was the only one in the house that could speak
english. Our Uncle Frank was one who was "ALL BOY" did not ever want to be
thought of as a girl. He knew A was for girl and O was for boy. Maybe you
have a similar problem here. Maybe your Grandpa's sons did the same. Changed
the name to be masculine and not feminine? Am I correct one that one, the
name change being to masculine? Just a guess, this is what happened to us.
Everything else other than what is from 1905 to about 1925 has the name as
CHIARA but during that time frame when Uncle Frank was the only one speaking
English it is listed as CHIARO.
Just an idea.
