Subject: Why did they leave Italy?
Date: Wed, 04 Jul 2001 15:39:49 GMT

I found that my grandfather left Maddaloni, Italy and settled in
American (Staten Island, New York). His brother, was in transit from
Maddaloni to America and boarded another ship to Cuba. I have a
co-worker, whose grandmother was from Naples, Italy and settled in
Peru. Checking the ship manifests from 1900 to 1910, I found many young
men leaving Maddaloni for America and also for Cuba. Perhaps it was to
build the naval base a Guantanimo (? spelling), because that is the town
of final destination. In this newsgroup we have requests for
information on our Italian relatives who immigrated to many countries of
South America. I know that Mount Vesuvius erupted in 1906, the same
year my grandfather first traveled to America. Two years later his
brother went to Cuba by way of America. The most common reason for
leaving Italy was to find work But why the different countries of North
and South America. Were there different companies contracting young men
to work in the new world? I would appreciate any comments on this
subject.
