Perhaps a street musician, as was my 19th century ancestor Francesco
LERTORA. In the 1841 census he was living in a Birmingham lodging
house, with other Italian musicians. He moved to Wolverhampton, where
the 1851 and 1861 censuses show him as a lodging house keeper. Most
of the boarders were Italian and German musicians. It is likely that
Francesco's wife was responsible for the running of the lodging house,
since his occupation as given at the registration of their children's
births and deaths was alway "itinerant musician", "musician", or some
variant.
