Two possibilities here: 1. The town records person was not a 'stickler for accuracy'. (I have a great grandfather who's name is spelled different on his birth certificate, than on his marriage certificate (letter crossed out) and different again on his death certificate! 2. It is possible there was a rift within the family. Father and one or more sons had a disagreement. Check the given names. If the son's who might have changed their surname then went on to give their children unfamiliar given names, chances are you have a family squabble.
