You probably mean Castel di Sangro, in Abruzzo (tucked in the SE corner of
L'Aquila province). Joe McGinnis wrote a great book about life there in the
context of its amazing soccer team successes in the 1990's, called, "The
Miracle of Castel di Sangro"
