I would recommend Caserta. My wife and I moved over 18 months ago and have
not regretted the move. Last winter and this winter the snow has not fallen
in Caserta nor Naples. The surrounding mountains do have snow and if you
want to get stuck in traffic due to winter conditions than Umbria is a sure
bet. But here in the south the weather on the coldest day very rarely gets
below 40 degrees. The average daytime temp is 60 and when the hale and rain
stops it is a beautiful sunny day. Behind the city of Caserta on the
mountain is the old town of Caserta vecchio. Great drive up to the old town
and great food in the restaurants there. Caserta has easy transportation
with the railroad, bus service, and two Autostrade exits or entrances
depending if you want to drive to Rome two and a half hours away or to
Naples thirty minutes away. Mount Vesuvio is always in sight with snow on
the top and without. Caserta has an open market on Saturday and Wednesdays.
Open markets are like an outdoor supermarket, with food and clothing and
kitchen devices. If you happen to be retired military like us, there is a
US Naval Hospital within 25 miles of Caserta and they do take care of
retirees. Plus a brand new still under construction Exchange and Commissary
where you can purchase American products if you miss them. If you obtain
dual citizenship you can qualify for the free medical system for all
Italians. Their free service is extended into all the countries of Europe.
The cost of the euro is very high and causes most retirees with fixed income
in US currency to pinch their pennies. Miss US television, not in Caserta.
We have Italian SKY TV with both Italian and English/American programming.
Cost is about $50.00 per month based on the current price of the euro. I
can go on and on about the benefits of living in the south and also as you
mentioned the city of your family.
