I have also found the same thing in the older records. I also found in
an old census type record, (1817) that they listed the husband's surname
but not the wife's. In the same comune in 1823 or so they listed both
surnames but not the ages of the children...very frustrating. Many times
I have found just the wife's first name was on old death records too.
Many of my lines end up with couples like Giorgio Clementi and Maria
Unknown, it seems to happen at about the same time for me, about the mid
1700's, same with couples listed with the same surname, at the same time
period. It makes it impossible to find the marrige record with an
approximate date and no wife's surname. And since it it usually found on
a death record it makes it hard to find the birth record of the person
who died.
