Roberto, I forwarded your message to a friend of mine whose ancestral
surname is Giura [no 's']; his family came from the town of Maschito in
Basilicata, and the ancestry is from Albania way back. He's done a great
deal of research. Here's his response to me, hope it helps:

"Trieste suggests a Balkan "George" to me. Giura or Juraj or
various combinations are found throughout the Balkans.

It might be Spanish (spelled in Italian -- ie, from Venice)as of one of
the Jurassic rock forms. (Or it could be Polish "coal", or a variant of

the Jura Swiss/French region. It's likely NOT Scottish Jura, nor
Iranian Jura (again "George")

I suspect that all the giura* in southern Italy, descended from a high
up muckety-muck who immigrated from Albania with George
Iskariot Scanderbeg."
