MAYFLOWER DESCENDANTS AND THEIR MARRIAGES FOR TWO GENERATIONS AFTER THE
LANDING John T. Landis. Landis lists, in very concise form, the Mayflower
passengers, their children and their grandchildren, with records of births,
deaths, and marriages as far as known. He also includes a copy of the famous
Mayflower Compact, as well as a short history of the Church of the Pilgrim
Fathers of New England 37 pp., paper. (1922), repr. 1990. [CC3280] $5.00
SUPPLEMENT TO TORREY'S NEW ENGLAND MARRIAGES PRIOR TO 1700 Melinde Lutz
Sanborn. Clarence Almon Torrey's New England Marriages Prior to 1700 (see
GP5825 above) is the best index to the early Colonial Period in existence.
This worthy supplement to Torrey incorporates corrections, new discoveries,
significant new biographical detail, or deletions from the original canon
which have surfaced since Torrey's death in 1962. Since these new
discoveries and corrections tend to make their way in the periodical
literature more frequently than anywhere else, this supplement is
predominantly an index to the major genealogical journals published since
1960. Users of the original Torrey work will find this supplement absolutely
indispensable, since their New England research cannot be considered
complete without it. 80 pp., indexed. 1991, repr. Balto., 1994 . [GP5142]=
$12.50
THE ENGLISH ANCESTRY, AND HOMES OF THE PILGRIM FATHERS WHO CAME TO PLYMOUTH
ON THE MAYFLOWER IN 1620, THE FORTUNE IN 1621, AND THE ANNE AND LITTLE JAMES
IN 1623 Charles E. Banks. This critically acclaimed work has biographical
sketches of 112 passengers who sailed on the first four ships to New
England. Along with data on the passengers' origins, family connections and
later histories, it substitutes proof for guess-work and blows holes in many
cherished traditions. The author gives first the historical evidence, then
follows a list of the passengers on the Mayflower, Fortune, Anne, and Little
James. These are dealt with, one by one, and the little known facts about
their place of residence in England and their parentage and ancestry are
given. 187 pp., indexed. (1929), repr. Balto., 1989. [GP299] $18.50
PLYMOUTH COLONY: IT'S HISTORY AND PEOPLE, 1620-1691 Eugene Aubrey Stratton.
this book is the first complete history and genealogy of the Plymouth
colony. It includes a concise chronological and topical history, more than
300 biographical sketches of the colony's inhabitants, maps, photographs,
and transcripts of important comtempory documents. The annotated
bibliography describes available primary and secondary literature on
Plymouth. 481 pp. [AN165] $19.95
MAYFLOWER INCREASINGS Susan E. Roser. Building on the previously published
work of John Landis--the 1922 Mayflower Descendants and Their Marriages for
Two Generations After the Landing--Mrs. Roser's work provides an accurate
and reliable summary of all that is presently known about the passengers of
the Mayflower for the first three generations in America--names, dates,
places, spouses, children, etc. Unique to the Roser work, each third
generation listing includes references to records or sources that will help
the researcher find fourth generation children. And new to this edition is a
"Probate Appendix" which will assist the reader in identifying fourth and
fifth generation children. Sources noted within the text are given in
parentheses in abbreviated form and are then fully identified in the
extensive Reference List. Also included as appendices are Governor
Bradford's "List of the Mayflower Passengers" and the "1627 Cattle
Division," as both are of extreme importance in Mayflower research. The book
is fully indexed and contains references to over 6,000 names or persons.
This new edition of Mayflower Increasings is, in fact, a whole new book, not
just a simple revision of an established text, and it contains at least
three times as much information. At a minimum it fills in hundreds of
blanks, resolves numerous discrepancies, and solves many long-standing
problems. 2nd Edition. 1995, 7" x 10". 179 pp. total, indexed, paper. repr.
Balto., 1996. [GP4995] $20.00
SECOND SUPPLEMENT TO TORREY'S NEW ENGLAND MARRIAGES PRIOR TO 1700 Melinde
Lutz Sanborn. While this second supplement draws extensively on periodical
literature (from 1991 to January 1995), it has a much heavier emphasis on
the unpublished work of some of the leading New England genealogists,
studies of English marriages of colonial immigrants, and studies of
immigrant clusters, most notably the Great Migration Study Project and the
Mayflower Families Through Five Generations project. As was the case with
the first supplement, this work contains corrections, new discoveries,
significant new biographical detail, or deletions from the original Torrey
canon. It is a substantially bigger book than the first supplement (50
percent longer) and has an index of more than 1,500 entries. Absolutely
indispensable for New England research! 124 pp., indexed. Balto., 1995.
[GP5143] $20.00
THE PLANTERS OF THE COMMONWEALTH, A STUDY OF THE EMIGRANTS AND EMIGRATION IN
COLONIAL TIMES: TO WHICH ARE ADDED LISTS OF PASSENGERS TO BOSTON AND TO THE
BAY COLONY; THE SHIPS WHICH BROUGHT THEM; THEIR ENGLISH HOMES, AND THE
PLACES OF THEIR SETTLEMENT IN MASSACHUSETTS, 1620-1640 Charles E. Banks.
Scrupulous in every detail, this work contains the names of 3,600 passengers
on the ninety-six ships which brought them to New England between 1620 and
1640. Working with the same records employed by Savage, Drake, and Hotten,
and with records unknown or inaccessible to them, Col. Banks here pulls the
several classes of records together to form the most complete and
authoritative collection of passenger lists for the period ever published.
In addition to the names of passengers and ships, places of origin, and
places of residence in America, the book includes indexes to surnames,
ships, English parishes, and New England towns. xiii, 231 pp., maps,
indexed. (1930), repr. Balto., 1991. [GP304] $20.00
NEW ENGLAND, FIRST SETTLERS OF, A GENEALOGICAL REGISTER OF THE [1620-1675]
John Farmer. This work, based almost exclusively on original records, is a
directory of the first settlers of New England. Arranged alphabetically by
surnames, the data on each individual includes the date of arrival, place of
settlement, dates of birth and death, and some biographical highlights. It
is an invaluable treatise on the settlers. With Additions and Corrections by
Samuel G. Drake. 355 pp. (1829, 1847), repr. Balto., 1994. [GP1760] $25.00
ANCESTRAL ROOTS OF CERTAIN AMERICAN COLONISTS WHO CAME TO AMERICA BEFORE
1700: THE LINEAGE OF ALFRED THE GREAT, CHARLEMAGNE, MALCOLM OF SCOTLAND,
ROBERT THE STRONG, AND SOME OF THEIR DESCENDANTS Frederick L. Weis. With
Additions and Corrections by Walter L. Sheppard, Jr. assisted by David
Faris. This is the seventh edition of the classic work on the royal ancestry
of certain colonists who came to America before the year 1700, and the first
to appear in four years. Like previous editions of this book, which had been
titled Ancestral Roots of Sixty Colonists Who Came to New England Between
1623 and 1650, the seventh edition embodies the very latest research on the
subject, the various lines of descent having been thoroughly revised and in
some cases extended. In addition, all footnotes and corrections in earlier
editions have been incorporated in the text, recently discovered errors
corrected, and many new lines added. Readers should note that in addition to
the names given in the sub-title of the work, descent is traced to the
following great figures of the Middle Ages: Clovis I, Clovis the Riparian,
Malcolm II, Isabel de Vermandois, William de Warenne, Edward I, Henry II,
Henry III, Edward III, King Aethelred II, and the early kings of Great
Britain and Ireland, as well as Norman and Magna Charta barons. 7th ed. 273
pp. total, indexed. 3rd printing Balto., 1995. [GP6192] $25.00

MAYFLOWER MARRIAGES Susan E. Roser. From the Files of George Ernest Bowman,
at the Massachusetts Society of Mayflower Descendants. The second of Mrs.
Roser's books based on the Bowman Files, this volume consists of 10,000
marriages spanning five centuries, with names, dates, and sources! In her
transcription of the Bowman Files, Mrs. Roser was at pains to show the line
of descent within each marriage (as found in the files), thus enabling the
reader to trace a genealogy through a marriage. In addition, inter-marriage
among Mayflower descendants is shown with the descent of the partner back to
the second generation. (There is in fact a separate chapter here showing
Mayflower inter-marriages through the eighth generation.) Also included are
the names of partners who had a child together but were not married. For
convenience in following the various lines, marriages are listed under the
names of the respective Mayflower passengers, and all names in the book can
be found in the index. 7" x 10". 415 pp., indexed, wrappers. (1990), repr.
Balto., 1994. [GP4996] $29.95
ONE HUNDRED AND SIXTY ALLIED FAMILIES John O. Austin. These genealogies
begin with the first member of the family to come to New England and, as a
result of the author's extensive research, are carried down into the 19th
century. Since many of these families migrated to Rhode Island, these family
histories also deal in detail with the Rhode Island stocks. xxi, 288 pp.,
indexed, 4to. (1893), repr. Balto., 1982. [GP205] $30.00
SALEM WITCHCRAFT AND HAWTHORNE'S "HOUSE OF THE SEVEN GABLES" Enders A.
Robinson. This book offers a detailed and highly readable account of the
Salem witchcraft affair of 1692. The book has three parts. Part One,
provides historical background, and describes the witchcraft frenzy in Salem
and Andover, identifying the various participants and explaining why events
proceeded as they did. Part Two briefly examines Hawthorne's treatment of
the witchcraft events and reveals the historical identity of several
characters in Hawthorne's novel. Part Three, gives biographies of the
accusers and the accused with genealogical connections which help to explain
why certain family groups were targeted for witchcraft accusation. 1992, 374
pages, illus., bibl., index. [HBR503] $31.50

descendant of no less than 172 different New Englanders, most of whom
settled in this country between 1635 and 1640. All 172 lines, which were
concentrated primarily in eastern Massachusetts, the Connecticut Valley,
Rhode Island and South Carolina, are set forth in this meticulously

THE MAYFLOWER READER A SELECTION OF ARTICLES FROM THE MAYFLOWER DESCENDANT
George Ernest Bowman. The Mayflower Reader consists of a comprehensive
selection of articles from the first seven volumes of The Mayflower
Descendant, an authoritative journal devoted to Pilgrim genealogy and
history, discontinued in 1937 and now quite scarce. The seventy-eight
articles selected for inclusion are of special significance to the
descendants of the early Plymouth and Cape Cod settlers, now numbering in
the hundreds of thousands and scattered to all points of the compass. They
include transcriptions of wills, inventories, passenger lists, and memoirs,
as well as a fair number of genealogies and historical sketches. 537 pp.,
illus., paper. (1899-1905), repr. 1996. [CC645] $39.95
MAYFLOWER DEEDS & PROBATES Susan E. Roser. From the Files of George Ernest
Bowman at the Massachusetts Society of Mayflower Descendants. Susan E.
Roser. This is the last of a three-book series that includes Mayflower
Marriages and the two-volume Mayflower Births & Deaths above. It is a
compilation of deeds and probate records extracted and transcribed from the
renowned Bowman Files. The several thousand deed abstracts provide such
information as name, occupation, and residence; date, sale, price, acreage,
and location of the land; and witnesses and date of recording. The will
abstracts include bequests to friends and family, descriptions of personal
real estate, and names of witnesses. The probate records associated with the
wills are a goldmine of genealogical information, as they name heirs and
their relationship to the deceased, minor children, guardians, and debtors.
Researchers will also appreciate that the wills and deeds herein pertain to
a number of non-Mayflower families whose lines originate in the counties of
Plymouth, Bristol, or Middlesex, Massachusetts. With an index of 25,000
entries! 7" x 10". 659 pp., indexed, paperback. Balto., 1994. [GP4994]=

MAYFLOWER SOURCE RECORDS . . [GP3839] $45.00
NEW ENGLAND MARRIAGES PRIOR TO 1700 Clarence A. Torrey. With a New
Introduction by Gary Boyd Roberts. This work, compiled over a period of
thirty years from about 2,000 books and manuscripts, is a comprehensive
listing of the 37,000 married couples who lived in New England between 1620
and 1700. Listed are the names of virtually every married couple living in
New England before 1700, their marriage date or the birth year of a first
child, the maiden names of 70% of the wives, the birth and death years of
both partners, mention of earlier or later marriages, the residences of
every couple and an index of names. The provision of the maiden names make
it possible to identify the husbands of sisters, daughters, and many
granddaughters of immigrants, and of immigrant sisters or kinswomen. 1,009

Talcott. This voluminous work treating 18,000 individuals in all consists of
genealogical notes on specific New York and New England families, as well as

immigrants to this country and forward to the last quarter of the 19th
century. The section of miscellaneous notes includes Bible records (with
cross references to the above genealogies), records of burials in New York
from 1727 to 1757, and an index of intermarriages for both New York and New
England families. A dense 50-page index contains the names of all persons

MAYFLOWER BIRTHS & DEATHS Susan E. Roser. From the Files of George Ernest
Bowman at the Massachusetts Society of Mayflower Descendants. In Two
Volumes. Susan E. Roser. This work is a compilation of birth and death
records from the Bowman files, the largest manuscript resource on Mayflower
genealogy in existence. With its companion volume above, Mayflower
Marriages, it encompasses all the vital records of the descendants of the
Mayflower passengers as found in the research files of the renowned
genealogist and editor of The Mayflower Descendant, George Ernest Bowman
(1860-1941), "the largest documented manuscript resource on Mayflower
genealogy." With references to 50,000 Mayflower relations, this two-volume
work contains, besides records of births, baptisms, deaths and burials,
references to burial location, cause of death, and address at death gleaned
from land and will records, court and church records, transcripts of
personal letters, and more. In keeping with the format established in
Mayflower Marriages, lines of descent are shown which enable the reader to
trace back to the first generation any name that is accompanied by a
generation number. Most lines are carried to the seventh and eighth
generations, and some to the tenth. Each volume is separately indexed. 2
vols. 7" x 10". 525 & 548 pp., indexed, paperback. Balto., 1997. . [GP4999]

NEW ENGLAND FAMILIES, GENEALOGICAL AND MEMORIAL THIRD SERIES William Richard
Cutter. Between 1913 and 1916, William Richard Cutter published four
separate 4-volume series entitled New England Families, Genealogical and
Memorial. The First Series, published in 1913 and reprinted by Clearfield
Company in 1994 to an enthusiastic audience (and now out of print), featured
genealogical and biographical essays on nearly 1,000 New England families.
The Third Series (1915) is comprised of nearly 1,000 additional New England
genealogical and biographical essays not found in the First Series and
promises to enable New England researchers to investigate 1,000 additional
lineages and nearly 10,000 New England ancestors unique to it. Each
genealogical sketch offers a derivation or origin for the surname of that
essay. The family history is traced forward from the oldest known ancestor
of the line to the family member (living or memorialized) featured in the
sketch, for whom, in turn, a biography=97often with photograph=97is=
provided.
This is followed, frequently, by additional, collateral lines linked to the
subject of the essay. It should be emphasized that many of these lineages go
back to 16th-century England, still others brim with Mayflower connections,
yet on the whole constitute a totally unique assemblage of New England
families. Finally, the name index found at the back of the final volume
identifies the nearly 10,000 principal descendants of the main families
treated. 4 vols. 2,395 pp. total, illus., indexed, paper. (1915), repr. 1996
