NEWBURY MASS. FIRST SETTLERS
List of Grantees and Genealogy of the First Settlers of Newbury 1635-1700
Joshua Coffin 1845

Joshua Coffin, eminent historian and genealogist, in his History of Newbury
published the oldest known list of first ninety one settlers (1642) along
with a genealogical profile of these settlers and some of their
descendants.
Coffin's work is often referenced by Savage in his "Genealogical Dictionary
of the First Settlers of New England." Unlike Savage, Coffin was "on the
scene" and had access to local records as well as many of the descendants
of the first settlers to assist him in compiling his data.
Included in this facsimile reprint from the original work is a photo of the
monument, on the Newbury lower green, listing 70 of the settlers.

NEWBURY in 1700

Between the years of 1897 and 1909 noted Essex County Historian and
Genealogist Sidney Perley went to great efforts to reconstruct a "picture"
of some of the Essex towns as they appeared in 1700. Perley did parts of
Newbury, Haverhill, Ipswich and Topsfield (1800). His Newbury effort covers
what is now the center of the city of Newburyport. The maps and land
records document what is now, largely the business district and the areas
around it referencing many structures still standing as well as many
destroyed in the great fire of 1811. Perley's work was published in John
J. Currier's "Ould Newbury: Historical and Biographical Sketches" in 1896.
Essex Books, republisher of 'Ould Newbury' have extracted these valuable
records into a smaller volume and added an index to the properties covered
by Perley. This geographical snapshot showing properties, their history,
and owners is an invaluable tool for those doing research on Newbury families.

NARRAGANSETT ATTACK - GRANTEES AND CLAIMANTS

On December 9, 1675 the combined group of Massachusetts Bay
and Plymouth Colony forces met on Dedham Plain where they were
formally turned over to General Josias Winslow who promised the
troops that if they "played the man, took the fort and drove the
enemy out of the Narragansett Country, which was their great seat,
they should each receive a gratuity of land besides their wages."
As a result of this promise beginning in 1685 and continuing until
1733, lands were granted founding what would later be the towns
of: Buxton, ME; Westminster, MA; Amherst, NH and Greenwich, MA.
The grantees ended up being, in may cases, the heirs of the soldiers
who fought in 1675. In addition to a brief account of the battle, this
book lists the grantees by name, origin town, many from Newbury
(where available), and claimants name, within the grant town founded.
This is a significant resource in finding "disappearing" ancestors
during this period and linking ancestors in "grant" towns back to
there origins.
