Dear Sir:
I have been trying to find out if there is any way to document or
authenticate a family story that has been handed down for many
generations.
I have been told that a "Heywood" ancestor of mine was a guard for
Richard III of England during the War of the Roses. As a reward for
saving the King's life, the Richard III gave my ancestor his sword. It
would be difficult to believe, but my family has the sword and it has the
inscription on it "R iii" and the picture of a crown. It appears very
old, I would like to find out if there is any way of authenticating the
story.
This being over 500 yrs ago, I understand it is very unlikely this was
recorded, as my ancestor was a "commoner", but it would be nice to at
least try.
Any suggestion you could give would be very much appreciated.
Thanks, Judy H. Thorsen
