According to Sir Anthony Wagner, all Gifford/Giffard lines likely go
back either to Osbern de Bolebec (10th century) or Giffard the Usher, of Dry
Drayton,Cambridgeshire, a Domesday tenant (1086), without serious
interruptions. I think the line of Lord Halsbury goes back to Osbern and
may be the oldest English male line. Unfortunately I haven't figured
out the origin of my immigrant ancestor's family, so it stops at about 1600.
