Helge:
Odd you should ask about William the Conqueror now. I just checked out a
couple of books about the Normans in an effort to determine if my own
ancestors were from the lines of the knights William took with him to
England.
The following is what I have, taken from "William I and the Norman
Conquest" by Frank Barlow:
"In the year 1027 or 1028 Herleva, the yound daughter of Fulbert, a
burgess and taaner of Falaise, gave birth to a son. He lover, Robert,
the equally young son of Richard II of Normandy, had taken her as his
mistress while he had been ruling the Hiemois as a subordinate during the
short principality of hi elder brother, Count Richard III. Herleva bore
him two children, this boy, William, and a daughter, Adelaide."
That would explain while William was always known as the Bastard Duke of
Normandy.
The family tree provided in this book shows the following:
William, b. 1027, Duke of Normandy 1035 - 1087, King of England 1066 -
1087, d. 1087
William's father Robert I, Count of Normandy 1027 - 1035
William's mother Herleva
Robert I's father Richard II, Count of Normandy 996 - 1026
Richard II's father Richard I, Count of Normandy 942 - 996
Richard I's father William I (Longsword)
William I's father Rolf
With the exception of William's mother, no one in the female line is
mentioned, but they should be tracable. Dates given are as shown above.
Hope this helps.
