I am wracking my brain for this.....I believe sometime in the last year an
article was published in Archaeology? National Geographic? concerning the
discovery of mummified bodies found at burial sites in the Mongolian
Desert.

One particularly well-preserved mummy (mummification occurred naturally due
to the very dry, cool air) had reddish hair & beard; I recall a discussion
in the article about the possibility of the ethnic makeup of these peoples.

Obviously, I'd suggest looking at these publications for further research.
