To reinforce Stewart Baldwin's criticism of your Fitz Alan line I
point you to Paul's Scots Peerage, vol 1, page 9, which gives an
account of this family's beginnings. He says Alan Fitz-Flaald was
son of Fledaldus or Flaald. Alan married Avelina de Hesding, by
whom he was father of Jordan, William and Walter. Paul does not
identify the wife of Flaald, but his father, Alain, is mentioned by
Ritchie, The Normans in Scotland, p280.
