The only near-contemporary source to name Joan's mother names her as
"Queen Clementia". Most authors have tried to identify her by either:

A: ignoring the "Queen" part, and looking for a Clementia or a name
confused with Clementia (such as Constance)

B: ignoring the "Clementia" part and calling her daughter of John's
first wife, Isabelle of Gloucester, Joan then being rendered
illegitimate by her parents' annulment.

or

C: ignoring both and choosing one of John's known mistresses, including
Agnes de Ferrers or the daughter of Hamelin.

The most recent work (alluded to in Faris but unpublished) suggests that
A is right.
