I see no particular pretension in wishing to document a descent from
Charlemagine via a membership in a hereditary society. Isn't that part of what
genealogy is all about, i.e. documenting one's lineage? Yes, millions, tens
of millions, perhaps hundreds of millions are descended from the man. My point
is, it's interesting to be able to document and outline that descent. If I
could, I think it would be great to trace my descent from one of Charlemagne's
servants, perhaps old Johann, the Goat Herder, but that's not likely, now is
it? Therefore, those who wish to connect their ancestry to Medieval times are
required to do so through noble and royal lines.

"Many millions" *may* think that it's a waste of time to work up the
documentation for membership in a hereditary society. So what? Personally,
I'd hate to base my life on the opinions of those "many millions." "Many
millions" would probably think it's idiotic and a huge waste of time for some
people to spend an inordinate amount of time getting "worked up" over posts to
an internet newsgroup.
