This is the same as having a patron saint. The Medici have mythical
origins in Perseus; the Acciaioli adopted San Lorenzo as their patron
saint (there was a family taboo that no one in the family should be so
named); for the Doria we have San Matteo. My own Portuguese line has
Saint Anthony as the patron saint.
