King Olaf's daughter, Ingegerda of Sweden (ca. 1000-1050), wife of Jaroslav I
Vladimirovic of Kiev, was known as Anne after her marriage to Jaroslav. This
appears to be overlooked in most sources such as Norm Ingham's recent article
involving Russian nomenclature and Agatha, wife of Edward the Exile, in NEHGR.
However, Ingegerda's alternative name is correctly shown in the tables for the
house of Kiev in Europaische Stammtafeln, which source Ingham supposedly
consulted. Due to the custom of women receiving new given names at the time of
marriage, this is just one reason why Ingham's argument about the name of
Edward the Exile's wife, Agatha, is meaningless, particularly since it now
appears likely that Agatha had a hitherto unknown first marriage in Kiev before
marrying Edward the Exile of England. For another such name change in
Agatha's own family at the time of marriage, I call your attention to her
granddaughter, Maud of Scotland, wife of King Henry I of England, who William
of Malmesbury says was called Edith before her marriage.

Best to all of you. Douglas Richardson
