Ooh, I disagree with both these comments! I think many English people are deeply
interested in History, although most people are probably only vaguely interested
in it. My impression is, that English people tend to think of Ireland as our
nearest neighbour, almost "one of us", much more so than those arrogant French,
don't ye know. Indeed, rather than wish Ireland would go away, I suspect many if
those whose knowledge of history leaves much to be desired, probably half think
that Ireland is "sort of part of Britain" regardless of the official names or
states of our countries. So many people have Irish relatives to any degree, that
Ireland is automatically considered "a sort of cousin". No. The English don't
want the Irish to go away. Far from it. They just want the Troubles to go away,
like anyone might.
