I saw a Dutch version of one of these 'city chests' about the Veendam on
vacation this fall. The chest is a heavily armored strongbox where money and
valuables would be stored. The version I saw had two latches with a long,
thick pin that went through them, a big end on one side of the pin and a loop
for a large lock on the other side. The keeper of the keys kept the keys to
these strongboxes. It would take quite a few strong men to move one of these
boxes, even if empty.
