Subject: One family - TWO coats of arms?
Date: Fri, 28 Jan 2000 10:05:47 +0000
I have an AYLETT family where two closely related branches seem to have
_completely_ different coats of arms by the early-mid 17thC. One - spelt
AYLET in Burke - has one based on 3 rings, with an English Rose added in
1645 as a result of services to Charles 1 in the Civil War. They seem to
be descended from an eldest son, so I assume this may be the earlier coat
of arms. The second lot, cousins of the first, spelt AYLETT in Burke, have
one based on 3 unicorns and a fesse.
Under what circumstances did this sort of thing happen? Should one assume
a major family breach?
