The reason that the royals did not catch the plague according to some
herbalist web sites, is due to a concoction called thieves oil. It is made
from the essential oils of Clove, Lemon, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus, and Rosemary.
Mixed with water and misted around it is supposed to kill many viruses and
bacteria.

The story says that the royal family found out about a ring of thieves that
were stealing from the homes of the dead. Since they seemed not to ever
catch the disease the royal family was very interested. They arranged to
have the group arrested. Once jailed the thieves traded their secret recipe
for their freedom.

If nothing else they probably smelled better.

Lavender is also supposed to do the same thing.
