Someone else did introduce the topic, but Mr. Hines did more than simply
reply to it. He cross-posted his reply to alt.usage.english (and
soc.gen.med), and it is the latter act that Mr. West is objecting to.
Mr. West also changed the groups to which the thread was posted,
removing his group, a.u.e, from the list, so he didn't even see your
polite reply. If you wish to discuss the issue with Mr. West, do so in
the group that he reads, a.u.e, or by email (but do make sure you
understand what is going on first).

This is a perpetual problem. Posters should be aware of cross-posting,
and eliminate it when it is inapropriate (which is most of the time).
Such sterling discussion as that above hardly makes a positive
contribution to the situation.
