Crests were only becoming common centuries after 1066. If this
one was based on a tradition it would have been created very many
years from hearsay. More likely, the tradition was invented to
explain this unusual combination. A more likely reason would be
the armigers possession of an apple orchard and his loyal
service in some campaign.
