Subject: Medieval rabbinical lines?
Date: Wed, 09 Aug 2000 08:05:11 -0500

A correspondent of mine advised me a short while ago that the NY
historian Bert S. Feldman, who is now deceased, had written an article
that gave the ROOSA family of the Netherlands/NY a "rabbinical"(and
likely medieval) lineage. Apparently, Feldman and another researcher
had concluded that the conjectured Roosa ancestor was a Heyman/Hyman or
"Heimen" Roosa(b.c. 1500) who emigrated to the Netherlands from Portugal
in the 1530s(I think that it was after the Emperor Charles V invited
Jews to settle there; can't recall the exact date). These Dutch Roosas,
then, would likely have been categorized as "Marranos"(hope I spelled
that correctly)?
While I am generally familiar with the exodus of the Sephardic
communities from Spain>Portugal>Netherlands, I really am left wondering
where one goes from this point. Mr. Feldman, per my contact, apparently
left no notes; at least none have come to light yet.
If anyone on the list has some advice or thoughts on the matter, would
appreciate a comment. Perhaps there is a Sephardic list out there
somewhere?<g> No....that would be too easy, wouldn't it!<g>
Regards to all,
