Well, we talked so much about it a few years ago in 1999-- and I have so many
articles on it that it is hard to backtrack and reiterate.
<<Using your dates, I can only presume that father Lord Dudley is
Edward Sutton, 4th Lord Dudley who died in 1586.>>
Correct -- so I am thinking the first Tomlinson child was born before his
death.
<,Son Lord Dudley is then Edward Sutton, 5th Lord Dudley who lived from 1567
till 1643. Which means that he was alive when his (and Elizabeth
Tomlinson's) grandson was the executor of the estate.>>
Correct -- as Dudd Dudley accused him of influencing Elizabeth's desires in
his will -- which translates to cutting him out because he had brought
financial ruin on the family with his coal processing experimentation.
<, 5th Lord Dudley
married Theodocia Harrington (her parents are N 12327 and N12328 in Paget's
book on the ancestors of Prince Charles. Edward was only about 15 when he
married, how old was Theodocia? I have five children recorded from this
marriage and am not certain of their dates of birth.>>
Correct again. I do not have the birthdate for Theodosia handy, but I assume
she was quite young as well. Edward Sutton was only 14 when he married.
<<Mary born 2 October 1586
Sir Ferdinando born in 1588
Anne born about 1590 (?)
Margaret born about 1592 (?)
Theodosia born about 1594 (?)>>
THE LEGITIMATE CHILDREN OF LORD DUDLEY AND LADY THEODOSIA HARRINGTON:
1.Sir Fernando, born 1588. His daughter, Frances, married Sir Humble Ward
and the title passed to this line.
2.Mary, born Oct. 2, 1586.
3.Ann, married 1615 Hans Meinhard vol Schonberg.
4.Margaret, who married Sir Miles Hobart.
5.Theodosia.
<<Ken, you tell that the 5th Lord Dudley already had one daughter by Elizabeth
Tomlinson before his father died in 1586 and that others were born after
1586. Was he fathering children simultaneously by wife and mistress? Can
you give the names and dates of birth for his children by Elizabeth
Tomlinson?>>
1581. Lord Dudley is married 12 June 1581 to Lady Theodosia, daughter of Sir
James Harrington, 12 June 1581, at St. Benet's Fink, London [CP 4:482]. His
age is only 14.
<<Can you give the names and dates of birth for his children by Elizabeth
Tomlinson? >>
Sons:
1.Dud Dudley. listed first, but DNB said he was fourth son born 1599.
2.Edward, died young.
3.John, died young.
4.Robert, of Netherton Hall. He died in 1652, had a daughter bapt. July 21,
1614.
Daughters:
1.Elizabeth, wife to Geffrey Dudley.
2.Jane, wife to Richard Parkhouse.
3.Catherine, wife of Thomas Dudley (the one mentioned in will).
4.Alice, wife of George Guest.
5.Dorothy, wife of Thomas Brooke of Sedgley.
6.Susan, died young.
7.Martha, wife of Thomas Wilmer.
<<I am very interested in hearing what others, who know more about this
situation, can contribute, whether they accept the proposition made or not.
You may be settling a very interesting question. >>
It is bound to be controversial. There is quite a bit of speculation, since
John Bagley's wife is not listed at the visitation held so manyu years after
the birth of all these children. Well over half a century had passed and
Dudd Dudley cannot be totally trusted with what he knew -- as even his mother
said that she was keeping things from him. Why is the big question. There is
some family secret here that is hard to unravel.
