Subject: Bringing the OT back into T -- The 'Sloan Problem' and Standards of Proof
Date: Thu, 1 Nov 2001 10:20:38 -0500
And this, friends, is the heart of the problem -- what is "very obvious" to
some, is inconceivable to others. (You can't tell me that the judges (trial
and appellate), jurors, police, and Governor of Virginia would all agree
that this man "very obviously" did not commit the crime). The fact that we
all have differing standards of proof is why evidence is required of those
advancing even "obvious" truths. Especially "truths" not within the
personal knowledge of anyone now living -- or anyone living in 3 (or more)
centuries.
If there's no evidence, the (rebuttable) presumption should be that it's not
true.
