Mr Verity ; this may be of some help
Littleham Nr Bideford Notes by D J Reichel and WH Rogers FSA
"Henry I gave it together with other estates belonging to that
honour (of Gloucester) to his natural son Robert (Trans D.A.v 33 p653) and
in 1129 it was held of Earl Robert by Sir Richard de Grenville, Robert
fitzHamon`s nephew (Gran Fam 23) (the relationship is denied by Round) In
1219 Ingram de Albemare and Gilam his wife made over that part of the town
of Littleham and Holwill to Peter de Potinton and Joan his wife by fine (F
of F 3 Henry III) In 1269 it was the property of Straungia, widow of Philip
de Meylurs who on 14 Jan 1270 conveyed it by fine to Peter de la Bere and
Juliana his wife in exchange for a rent of 20/- derived from Crewkerne in
Somerset (F of F 54 Henry III) while on the 16th Feb in the same year Peter
and his wife granted the manor to Richard le Butiler (F of F 54 Henry III) .
In 1409 William Beaumont died siesed of Littleham manor and Upcot near
Bideford . (Ch In P.M. 2 Henry IV)
Richard Hankford acquired it from Whitfield and died siesed of it in
1430 and his daughter Elisabeth in 1433. From her it passed to her half
sister Anne wife of Thomas Boteler Earl of Ormond and so to Anne`s daughter
wife of Sir James St Leger of Annery who died seised of it in 1532 (Lacy 162
; Ch In pm 9 Henry VI; 12 Henry VI and 24 Henry Viii) The manor and advowson
were for a time in the possession of the Tremaynes apparently by grant of
Sir John St Leger to Edmund Tremayne and his daughter Eulalia (Ch In pm 24
Eliz) Edmund died in 1582 and was succeeded by his son Francis ( Ch In pm
24 Eliz) of whom they were held by Sir Richard Grenville . He settled it in
1586 together with Bideford,Landcross and Lundy Island on himself and his
wife Mary for life and then after a free payment of his debts on his son
Bernard . Sir Richard died in 1591 (Ch In pm 35 Eliz) and in the same year
Sir John St Leger conveyed it with a number of other manors by fine to
Tristam Arscot his son in law (F of F Easter 33 Eliz) Arscot sold it to
Baltasar Boteler of Stone in Parkham (Lysons II p 32) whose daughter Joan
brought it to Sir William Leigh of Borough in Northam. (Vivian 105,528) his
daughter Agnes brought it in 1629 to Arthur Basset of Umberleigh (F of F
Easter 5 Chas I ) "
The Visitation of Devon p 264 shows the four daughters of Sir
William Courtenay and his wife Elizabeth (Hungerford) marrying a Pomeroy, a
Luttrell, a Fulford and Sir Thomas Grenfeild by lic in 1447. Joan grand
daughter of Sir Wms son Humphrey married Thomas Carew and Catherine ,
daughter of Sir Wm, had a daughter Catherine who married circa 1495 Edmund
Carew.
These may be the earlier Carew/Courtenay connections and the pass
the parcel life of the manor and advowson of Littleham may add to the
connections known of the Grenvilles/Bassetts/Leighs/Tremaynes/Courtenays/and
Carews.
Personally I found little at the Courtenay Society , Burke is
sometimes less than accurate (as you say , is anything ?) but the Feet of
Fines and the Inq Post mortem are and also the early PCC wills from 1383.
I hope that some of this may help. Yrs Eliz
