There is (probably) a slightly closer known relationship than this between
Sir James Audley and Sir Ralph de Ferrers.
According to Complete Peerage (vol.3, p.275), the paternal grandmother of
James Audley's mother, Eve de Clavering, was one Margery de la Zouche.
Margery's parents are not identified there, but chronologically it seems
possible that she was a daughter of the Sir Alan la Zouche who married
Ellen, the daughter of Roger de Quency. Another of Roger de Quency's
daughters, Margaret, married William de Ferrers, and was an ancestress of
Sir Ralph de Ferrers.
That would provide a common ancestor for Sir James and Sir Ralph which I
think is one generation earlier than the one proposed by Douglas Richardson,
and one generation later than the one outlined above. But it would not
provide a blood relationship between Sir James and John de Willoughby, as he
was a descendant of William de Ferrers' other wife, Sybil.
