Dear Chris, John, etc. ~
As an afterthought, I note in H.C. Maxwell Lyte's book, History of
Dunster, 1:33, that Isabel (de Ferrers) de Mohun's other
granddaughter, Eleanor de Mohun, born 1281, married John de Carew.
In a footnote in 2:556, Maxwell Lyte states that Eleanor de Mohun's
marriage was acquired by Nicholas de Carew in 1295 for his son's use.
Previous to that, Maxwell Lyte states that Eleanor's marriage had been
acquired by her "aunt Isabel de Fienles" who had in turn acquired it
from the Queen-mother.
If correct, then it would appear that Eleanor de Mohun was niece to
Isabel de Fiennes, 2nd wife of Ingram de Fiennes, of Wendover, co.
Buckingham. It remains to be seen, however, if Isabel was the sister
of Eleanor's father, Sir William de Mohun, or of Eleanor's mother,
Beatrice, whose parentage is unknown.
As best I know, Isabel de Fiennes' parentage has never been
ascertained. She was evidently the second and evidently much younger
wife of Ingram de Fiennes. She is not known to have had any
children. If she was Isabel, the daughter of Reynold de Mohun and his
2nd wife, Isabel de Ferrers, it would suggest that Edmund Deincourt's
wife, Isabel, was another person. Unless, of course, Isabel de
Fiennes had two marriages, one to Ingram de Fiennes, and one to Edmund
Deincourt.
As I recall, there is a reference to Isabel de Fiennes as the king's
kinswoman. If correct, then perhaps she was not a Mohun, as there is
no known close connection between either the Mohun or Ferrers families
to the crown. Regardless, perhaps if we are lucky, this discussion of
Edmund Deincourt's wife may lead to a resolution of the identity of
Isabel de Fiennes.
If Isabel de Fiennes proves to be the sister of William de Mohun's
wife, Beatrice, that may well be valuable, as Beatrice evidently
married in 1288 to a second husband and presumably had further issue.
If Beatrice's 2nd husband can be identified, we may well be on our way
to solving the identity of both Beatrice and Isabel.
Best always, Douglas Richardson, Salt Lake City, Utah
