I think you are mistaken.

Although the grandparents of Jesse James are known, his ancestry beyond
that is not known.

Just about everybody nowadays is trying to claim a relationship with Jesse
James, but nobody can prove it.

I have a great great uncle named Joseph Martin James. This might make me a
relative of Jesse James, if somebody could prove who the great-grandfather
of Jesse James was.
